Director Junya Ishizaki clarified the reasoning behind this decision in a recent Gamespot interview (February 12, 2025), emphasizing a gameplay-driven approach.
Ishizaki stated that the inclusion of these familiar foes wasn't a lore-focused decision, but rather a practical one. The diverse boss selection was necessary to enrich the gameplay experience and provide variety within Nightreign's unique structure. While acknowledging fan affection for these classic encounters, Ishizaki confirmed that the focus remained on integrating them seamlessly into Nightreign's atmosphere, without overly stressing narrative consistency across different FromSoftware universes. The team aimed for a fun, engaging experience, prioritizing gameplay over intricate lore connections.
He further suggested that players might find more satisfaction focusing on Nightreign's primary antagonist, the Night Lord, and its potential ties to the broader Elden Ring narrative.
Notably, the inclusion of these bosses might not create a strong lore connection between Elden Ring and other FromSoftware titles.
A Look at Returning Bosses
Two bosses from previous FromSoftware games have been confirmed: the Nameless King (Dark Souls 3) and the Centipede Demon (Dark Souls). The appearance of The Duke’s Dear Freja (Dark Souls 2) is also heavily speculated based on a similar spider seen in the Nightreign trailer.
The Nameless King, Gwyn's firstborn son, is a challenging optional boss in Dark Souls 3, known for his lightning attacks and wind-based abilities. His location, Archdragon Peak, is easily missed without completing the related sidequests.
The Centipede Demon, a six-headed monstrosity from the original Dark Souls, is speculated to be a creation related to the Witch of Izalith and the Flame of Chaos.
