Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation

Director Andy Muschietti, known for It and The Flash, recently offered an update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Initially announced by Sony Pictures in 2009, the project has seen various directors attached, including Josh Trank, before Muschietti took the helm. The film's development has been protracted, a fact Muschietti attributes to the complexities of adapting such a beloved and visually ambitious game.

Sony's recent announcement of several other video game adaptations at CES 2025 – including Helldivers, Horizon Zero Dawn, and an animated Ghost of Tsushima – further highlights the studio's commitment to bringing its iconic properties to the screen.

Muschietti confirmed on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso that the Shadow of the Colossus film is not abandoned. He cited the challenges inherent in balancing the project's creative vision with its substantial budget requirements, a factor influenced by the game's popularity and unique scale. He also revealed the existence of multiple scripts, indicating an ongoing refinement process.

The Shadow of the Colossus game's influence can be seen in other titles, such as Capcom's 2024 release Dragon's Dogma 2. While Muschietti isn't a self-described "big gamer," he acknowledges the game's status as a "masterpiece," having played it multiple times. The director's passion for the source material, combined with the continued involvement of original game director Fumito Ueda (who has since founded GenDesign and announced a new sci-fi title at The Game Awards 2024), suggests a commitment to preserving the game's essence in the film adaptation. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus continues, with hopes that the film will resonate with existing fans and attract new audiences.
