Valve has just unveiled a groundbreaking update to the Source SDK, now including the complete Team Fortress 2 client and server game code. This significant release empowers players to create entirely new games from scratch, offering modders unprecedented freedom to modify, expand, and even completely reimagine Team Fortress 2 in countless innovative ways.
However, it's important to note that creations made using this update cannot be sold. Any mods or derivative content must be offered for free on a non-commercial basis. Despite this, Valve is allowing these creations to be published on the Steam Store, where they will appear as new entries in the Steam game list.
Valve acknowledges the deep investment that players have in their TF2 inventories and the invaluable contributions from the Steam Workshop community. The vast majority of items in the game are the result of the TF2 community's dedication. Valve encourages mod creators to respect this community effort and to avoid developing mods that aim to profit from the work of Workshop contributors. They also hope that many mods will continue to support access to players' existing TF2 inventories, where feasible.
In addition to the SDK update, Valve is rolling out a substantial update to its entire back catalog of multiplayer Source engine games. This includes enhancements like 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other improvements to games such as Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source, and Half-Life: Deathmatch Source.
This news comes on the heels of the release of the seventh and final installment of the Team Fortress 2 comic series in December, after a seven-year wait. These comics have not only provided fans with deeper insights into their beloved characters and narratives but also reflect Valve's ongoing commitment to one of its most enduring franchises.
