Microsoft's ongoing AI integration efforts are bringing its AI Copilot to Xbox, promising a smarter gaming experience. Soon to be tested by Xbox Insiders via the mobile app, Copilot will offer gaming advice, track your progress, and handle various tasks. This builds on Copilot's existing Windows integration (replacing Cortana in 2023).
Initial features include game installation (already possible via a single app button), play history review, achievement tracking, library browsing, and game recommendations. Direct voice interaction within the Xbox app during gameplay will mirror Copilot's Windows functionality.

A key feature is Copilot as a gaming assistant, expanding on its PC capabilities. Just as you can currently ask Copilot for PC game-related advice (boss strategies, puzzle solutions), this functionality will soon extend to the Xbox app, sourcing answers from various online resources. Microsoft emphasizes accuracy, collaborating with studios to ensure information aligns with their vision and properly credits original sources.
Microsoft's ambitions extend beyond these initial features. Future possibilities include walkthrough assistance, item tracking, competitive gaming strategy suggestions, and real-time engagement analysis. While these remain conceptual, they highlight Microsoft's commitment to deep Copilot integration with Xbox gameplay, encompassing both first-party and third-party titles.

Regarding data privacy, Xbox Insiders will have control during the preview, managing interaction, access to conversation history, and data sharing. While optional in the preview, the possibility of future mandatory use remains open. A Microsoft spokesperson stated: "During this preview on mobile, players will be able to decide how and when they want to interact with Copilot for Gaming, whether it has access to their conversation history, and what it does on their behalf. As we preview and test Copilot for Gaming with players early, we will continue to be transparent about what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices players have around sharing their personal data."
Beyond player-focused applications, Microsoft will detail developer-focused plans at the Game Developers Conference next week.
