Apple Unveils the iPhone 16e: A Budget-Friendly Option with Compromises
Apple recently launched the iPhone 16e, its most affordable offering, effectively replacing the iPhone SE (2022). However, unlike its predecessor, the iPhone 16e doesn't boast the same significant price reduction. Priced at $599, it sits closer to the $799 iPhone 16 released last fall. Pre-orders begin Friday, February 21st, with availability starting February 28th.
The iPhone 16e is notable for being the first device to utilize Apple's C1 cellular modem. While Apple's in-house chips have a strong track record, the performance of the C1 modem will be crucial in determining the phone's overall user experience. Apple will be hoping to avoid a repeat of the "Antennagate" controversy.

Visually, the iPhone 16e closely resembles the iPhone 14 from the front, sharing the same 6.1-inch OLED display with a 2532x1170 resolution and 1200-nit peak brightness. However, this falls short of the iPhone 16's display quality. It incorporates the Action button and a USB-C port, but lacks Camera Control.
The rear design is more distinctive, featuring a single 48MP camera, similar to the previous iPhone SE. While it shares similarities with the iPhone 16's main camera, it lacks sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic Styles, and adjustable portrait mode focus. The selfie camera, however, appears identical and includes Face ID.
The phone's construction utilizes aluminum, a glass back, and Apple's Ceramic Shield on the front. While Apple continues to tout its durability, it's worth noting that a newer, supposedly "two times tougher" Ceramic Shield is used in other models, raising questions about the iPhone 16e's long-term screen resilience.
Internally, the iPhone 16e features an "A18" chip, but it's a less powerful variant compared to the iPhone 16's A18. While the CPU core count is the same, the GPU has four cores instead of five. Performance is expected to be lower than the iPhone 16, and even further behind the iPhone 16 Pro. However, it retains the Neural Engine, enabling Apple's intelligence features.
The iPhone 16e's lower price point necessitates compromises. While not overly compromised, the price cut isn't as drastic as with previous budget iPhone SE models. The $599 price tag, while making it Apple's cheapest, contrasts sharply with the $429 launch price of the 2022 iPhone SE, which offered the same chip as the then-$799 iPhone 13. Although the iPhone 16e's design is more current than the 2022 SE, it's based on a design with minor yearly tweaks since 2018.
The iPhone 16e's actual performance remains to be seen. With competitive Android alternatives like the OnePlus 13R available around the $600 price point, Apple faces a challenge in attracting buyers outside its existing ecosystem.
