Insomniac Games Eyes More Game-to-Screen Adaptations Following CEO's Retirement
Insomniac Games, renowned for the Ratchet & Clank franchise, has expressed keen interest in expanding its game-to-screen adaptations. This revelation comes from co-Studio Head Ryan Schneider in a recent Variety interview, following the announcement of founder and CEO Ted Price's retirement.
Schneider highlighted the studio's prior experience with the 2016 Ratchet & Clank film, stating their ongoing enthusiasm for such projects, particularly concerning the beloved Ratchet & Clank universe. The 2016 film, while receiving mixed reviews, has paved the way for future endeavors, especially with Insomniac's acquisition by Sony in 2019. Sony's proven success with game adaptations, exemplified by the critically acclaimed The Last of Us series, bolsters Insomniac's confidence in this direction.
Sony's Successful Track Record in Game Adaptations
Insomniac's ambitions align perfectly with Sony's successful foray into game adaptations. Sony's recent successes include the 2022 Uncharted film and the 2023 The Last of Us series. Further solidifying their commitment, Sony's CES 2025 press conference unveiled several upcoming projects: The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO, April 2025), an Until Dawn live-action film (April 2025), a Ghost of Tsushima Legends anime series (Crunchyroll, 2027), and feature films based on Helldivers and Horizon Zero Dawn, though release dates for the latter two remain unannounced.
Insomniac Founder Ted Price Retires After 30 Years
The interview also marked the announcement of Ted Price's retirement after three decades at the helm of Insomniac Games, the studio behind iconic franchises like Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and Marvel's Spider-Man. Price cited his decision as a natural progression after 30 years of leadership, emphasizing the importance of promoting internal talent.
Three veteran Insomniac employees – Ryan Schneider, Chad Dezern, and Jen Huang – will now lead the studio as co-Studio Heads. Price expressed confidence in their ability to continue Insomniac's legacy, highlighting their deep understanding of the company's culture and processes.
