Investigating vehicle collisions just got easier with the EDR "Blackbox" Scan Tool and PDF Accident Reports from Collision Sciences. Our CrashScan app, used with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, allows you to efficiently scan a vehicle's computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR) where supported (see vehicle support below). This powerful tool helps investigators flag, capture, and interpret stored accident data, providing crucial information for validating insurance claims and identifying potential liability issues.
Vehicle Support (EDR & Full System Diagnostic Scan)
CrashScan supports over 3000 unique vehicle year/make/model combinations internationally. Check compatibility here: https://collisionsciences.ca/reports/check_support/
Contextual Accident Reports
A successful CrashScan provides detailed insights into impact severity, orientation (front, rear, or side), and crucial contextual information, including:
- Accident severity (minor, moderate, or severe)
- EDR trigger thresholds
- 5 seconds of pre-crash data: speed, brake pedal, accelerator pedal use, and steering
- Number of occupants and seatbelt status
- Estimated damage repair cost ($)
- Likelihood of structural crush damage
- Injury risk thresholds (whiplash, injury duration)
- G-force context compared to daily activities
*Injury risk algorithms utilize stored acceleration values, scientific articles, and databases like the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS).

Privacy Legislation Status (EDR Data)
Canada: Currently, no specific legislation governs EDR data; it's considered diagnostic and non-private. However, best practices dictate obtaining consent from insurers.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, along with statutes in seventeen states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington), place limitations on EDR data retrieval and generally require the consent of the vehicle owner or policyholder, with certain exceptions.
End-User Consent
By downloading the CrashScan app, you consent to its installation, future updates, and data collection practices as outlined in our privacy statement. You can withdraw consent at any time by uninstalling the app. For more information, please visit CollisionSciences.ca.
