The Witcher 4 made headlines during its announcement at the Game Awards in December 2024. The reveal included a trailer spotlighting Ciri as the game's new protagonist, a shift from the beloved Geralt who led the series through its first three installments. This change sparked significant discussion within the community.

In an interview with VGC, The Witcher 4 Narrative Director Phillipp Weber addressed the fan reactions to Ciri's new role. He expressed his understanding of the community's attachment to Geralt but reassured fans that the team is committed to making Ciri's journey equally compelling. "The best thing that we can do, and I think this is really our goal, is to prove that with Ciri, we can do a lot of interesting things so we can really make it worth it because this decision to have Ciri as a protagonist wasn’t made yesterday, we started making this a very long time ago," Weber stated.

The Witcher 4 Executive Producer, Małgorzata Mitręga, also shared his thoughts, expressing gratitude for the community's support and acknowledging the fans' passion. "Everyone has the right to have an opinion, and we do believe it comes from the passion for our games and I think the best answer for that will be the game itself when the game is released," he said.

The Witcher 4 promises to be the most ambitious entry in the series yet, featuring new regions and monsters. It's slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, though a specific release date has not been announced.
