SwitchArcade Round-Up: Reviews Featuring ‘Ace Attorney Investigations Collection’, Plus New Releases and Sales

Author : Liam Feb 01,2025

Hello, fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's over, but let's cherish those sunny memories. This week brings a bounty of reviews, fresh releases, and tempting sales! Let's dive in!

Reviews & Mini-Views

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)

The Switch continues to offer second chances at classic titles. Following the successful re-releases of Trials of Mana and Live A Live, we now have the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, featuring Miles Edgeworth's adventures. This collection showcases the series' knack for expanding upon previous storylines, particularly in the second game, which retroactively enhances the first. Finally experiencing the second game in English is a treat!

The Investigations games offer a fresh perspective, viewing cases from the prosecutor's standpoint. While the core mechanics remain largely unchanged – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, and solving cases – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's personality add a distinctive flavor. The pacing can feel less structured than the main Ace Attorney titles, potentially leading to some lengthy cases, but fans of the franchise will undoubtedly appreciate this sub-series. If the first game feels slow, persevere – the second is significantly better.

Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode for relaxed play, and the ability to switch between original and updated graphics/soundtracks. A helpful dialog history feature is also included.

The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling contrast between the two games, forming a strong overall experience. The official localization of the second game is fantastic, and the extra features enhance the package. With this release, almost every Ace Attorney game is now available on Switch. If you've enjoyed the other titles, this is a must-have.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)

A sequel to Gimmick! is unexpected but welcome. Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful sequel stays true to the original, perhaps even too much for some. Six challenging physics-based platforming levels await, pushing players to their limits. A new easier mode caters to those seeking a less demanding experience.

The core gameplay remains familiar, utilizing Yumetaro's star for attacks and puzzle-solving. Collectibles add a layer of customization, rewarding players for tackling difficult optional sections. The game's length is manageable, but the difficulty remains high. Generous checkpoints mitigate frustration, while charming visuals and music add to the experience.

Gimmick! 2 is a surprisingly excellent sequel, successfully building upon the original without losing its identity. Fans of the first game will be delighted, and challenging platforming enthusiasts should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a casual experience should be warned – the difficulty is substantial.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, shifting from the original's action-platformer style to a shoot 'em up experience. Surprisingly, it works well, although the Switch's hardware limitations are noticeable. Despite this, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and unsettling visuals make it an enjoyable experience.

The weapon system adds a strategic layer. Managing the primary weapon's energy, utilizing the melee weapon for energy regeneration, and strategically employing the third weapon creates a satisfying rhythm. Mastering this interplay is crucial for survival.

While different from its predecessor, Mecha Therion retains the original's distinct atmosphere. It's a stylish heavy metal shoot 'em up that avoids many genre pitfalls. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version still delivers a solid experience.

SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)

Licensed games often cater to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. It delivers ample fan service, excelling in its presentation of the source material's world, characters, and writing. However, its appeal to non-fans is limited.

The game features a small selection of mini-games, which, while adequately presented, lack depth and replayability for those unfamiliar with the franchise. Even fans might find the limited variety repetitive.

Despite its strong presentation, Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash feels unbalanced, prioritizing fan service over broader appeal. While fans might appreciate the unlockables, the overall experience is short-lived and unlikely to engage non-fans.

SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)

This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, offering three charming 8-bit titles. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. All three games are fully localized, a significant achievement.

The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island provides a solid adventure experience, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are groundbreaking, but they possess a unique charm.

Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection is a worthwhile purchase for Sunsoft fans and those interested in exploring lesser-known NES titles. The careful handling of these games, including full localization, makes this collection a valuable addition.
