DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's facial expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.
A new 30-second promotional video showcased scenes of Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during flight. The latter scene sparked online debate, with some viewers commenting on Superman's seemingly unnatural facial stillness amidst the wind-blown hair and cape. Speculation ranged from poor CGI to other technical issues.
However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot features no CGI on Superman's face. He attributed the unusual appearance to the close-up wide-angle lens used and confirmed the authenticity of both the background (filmed in Svalbard, Norway) and actor David Corenswet's performance. The seemingly knowing smirk, Gunn implies, is a genuine expression from Corenswet.
Despite Gunn's explanation, the debate continues, with comparisons drawn to similar scenes in Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Nevertheless, excitement for the Superman film remains high. The film, the first in the DCU's "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters," is slated for release on July 11, 2025.
