Sony, the maker of PlayStation, has stepped up to support the communities devastated by the wildfires sweeping through southern California, donating a substantial $5 million. This contribution will aid first responders, community relief and rebuilding efforts, as well as assistance programs for those impacted by the ongoing crisis.
"Los Angeles has been the home of our entertainment business for more than 35 years," stated Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's Chairman and CEO, alongside Hiroki Totoki, President and COO, in a joint statement shared on X/Twitter. They further expressed their commitment to collaborating with local business leaders to enhance Sony Group's support for relief and recovery initiatives in the coming days.
The wildfires, which erupted on January 7, have continued to cause havoc across the greater Los Angeles area. Even a week later, three fires are still raging, spreading destruction relentlessly. According to the BBC, the toll is severe, with 24 fatalities and 23 people reported missing in the two largest fire zones. Firefighters are currently preparing for a challenging day, as forecasts predict stronger winds that could exacerbate the situation.
Sony is not alone in its efforts to provide relief. As reported by CNBC, numerous other corporations have also contributed significantly to the cause. Disney has donated $15 million, while Netflix and Comcast have each given $10 million. The NFL and Walmart have donated $5 million and $2.5 million respectively, and Fox has contributed $1 million, among other corporate donors.
