Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the upcoming kart racer from Sega and Sonic Team, promises the largest roster in series history and a host of innovative gameplay mechanics. A recent PlayStation.blog post detailed exciting new features ahead of the game's closed network test.
A Massive Roster of Iconic Characters
The game boasts a lineup of beloved characters from the Sonic and Sega universes. While the initial trailer focused primarily on Sonic characters, the official website confirms at least 23 racers at launch, with more to come. Confirmed racers include Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, the Sonic Riders team (Jet, Wave, Storm), the Deadly Six (Zavok, Zazz), Team Dark (Shadow, Rouge, E-123 Omega), Dr. Eggman and his creations (Egg Pawn, Metal Sonic), and the Chaotix (Vector, Charmy, Espio). Blaze, Silver, Cream, and Big round out the currently revealed roster.
CrossWorlds: Dynamic Racing Across Multiple Dimensions
Prepare for a revolutionary racing experience with the introduction of "Travel Rings." These portals transport racers between diverse environments known as "CrossWorlds" in real-time, dramatically altering the race course. Each CrossWorld offers a unique theme park-like atmosphere, filled with unexpected obstacles, giant monsters, and stunning scenery. The game features 24 main tracks and 15 CrossWorlds to explore. Dynamic tracks, inspired by Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, change throughout each lap, demanding constant adaptation.
Customization, Extreme Gear, and Powerful Gadgets
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds offers unprecedented vehicle customization. Players can extensively modify their vehicles, adjusting front and rear parts, wheels, colors, tire designs, cockpit aesthetics, and glow effects. In addition to the extensive vehicle customization, players can equip their racers with 23 different gadgets to fine-tune their racing strategies. The return of Extreme Gear from the Sonic Riders series adds a thrilling boost-based racing element, using hoverboards for high-speed maneuvers. Sonic Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka calls the game "a great culmination of all the Sonic Racing series games to date."
