Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Writer Says

Author : Evelyn Apr 16,2025

Remember Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Fear not, fans! The director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still on board, and we've got a reassuring update straight from the project's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, hinting at the film's progress. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

Currently shrouded in mystery, the film is set to take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has clarified its timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions the film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

In the same interview, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's film will follow the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu, slated for 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, it's been reported that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this highly anticipated project.

Tropper's optimistic words suggest that things are finally moving forward for Levy's film, although fans will need to exercise patience. The earliest we can expect to see it is in the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027.

It's been a while since Disney released a Star Wars film, with the last being the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, Disney has canceled several planned films, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Notably, a Star Wars movie initially scheduled for late 2026 was recently removed from Disney's release calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey, exploring the aftermath of The Rise of Skywalker.

The Obaid-Chinoy project has experienced several changes, including the departure of screenwriter Steven Knight, who took over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Rey remains a key focus for Disney, with reports indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming Star Wars films.

And that's not all on Disney's Star Wars agenda. Late last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode.
