Sony's Unveiled Los Angeles PlayStation Studio: A New AAA Title in the Works

A recent job posting confirms Sony Interactive Entertainment has established a new, unannounced AAA game studio in Los Angeles, California. This marks the 20th first-party studio under the PlayStation umbrella and is currently developing a high-profile, original IP for the PS5.

The news has generated considerable excitement among gaming enthusiasts, given PlayStation's impressive track record with its first-party studios. The addition of this new studio further expands Sony's already renowned development capabilities, joining established names like Santa Monica Studio, Naughty Dog, and Insomniac Games. Recent acquisitions of studios like Housemarque, Bluepoint Games, and Firesprite have also significantly bolstered PlayStation's first-party lineup.

Speculation regarding the studio's identity centers around two possibilities. One theory suggests it may house a spin-off team from Bungie, stemming from the July 2024 layoffs where 155 Bungie employees transitioned to Sony Interactive Entertainment. This team was reportedly involved in Bungie's "Gummybears" incubation project.

A second, and perhaps more likely, candidate is the team led by Jason Blundell, a veteran Call of Duty developer. Blundell co-founded Deviation Games, a studio working on a PS5 AAA title before its closure in March 2024. Following the studio's dissolution, many former Deviation Games employees joined PlayStation, seemingly under Blundell's leadership. Considering the longer gestation period of Blundell's team, it's plausible that this is the team behind the new Los Angeles studio.

While the nature of the game remains undisclosed, speculation abounds, with some suggesting a continuation or reboot of Deviation Games' previous project. Regardless, the confirmation of yet another first-party PlayStation studio developing a AAA title is welcome news for fans, even if an official announcement may still be years away.
