PlayStation Productions Unveils Ambitious Slate of Game Adaptations at CES 2025
PlayStation Productions made a significant splash at CES 2025, announcing a wave of new game adaptations set for release in 2025 and beyond. The January 7th presentation showcased a diverse range of projects, highlighting the studio's expanding reach in the entertainment industry.
New Adaptations Announced:
- Ghost of Tsushima: Legends Anime Series: A new anime series based on the popular Ghost of Tsushima multiplayer mode, Legends, is in the works, a collaboration between Crunchyroll and Aniplex. Directed by Takanobu Mizumo with story composition by Gen Urobuchi, and featuring a soundtrack partnership with Sony Music, it's slated for a Crunchyroll exclusive premiere in 2027.
- Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 Films: Film adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn (produced by Sony Pictures) and Helldivers 2 (produced by Columbia Pictures) are officially in development, though details remain scarce.
-
Until Dawn Film Adaptation: A film adaptation of Until Dawn is set for release on April 25, 2025.
-
The Last of Us Season Two: Neil Druckmann revealed a new trailer for The Last of Us season two, confirming its adaptation of the The Last of Us Part II storyline and the introduction of key characters like Abby and Dina.
Past Successes and Future Projects:
PlayStation Productions has a growing track record of successful adaptations. While earlier adaptations like Resident Evil and Silent Hill had mixed critical reception, more recent projects such as Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023) performed strongly at the box office. The Twisted Metal series, though not universally acclaimed, completed production of its second season in late 2024 (release date pending).
Beyond the CES announcements, PlayStation Productions continues to develop film adaptations of Days Gone and a Uncharted sequel, as well as a God of War TV series.
The continued success and expansion of PlayStation Productions strongly suggest that more beloved PlayStation franchises will be adapted into film and television in the years to come, driven by audience demand and the proven viability of these adaptations.
