Social media posts, now removed, showcased images and gameplay, allegedly from someone who purchased the game through an online marketplace. Further fueling the leak, now-deleted listings on a U.S. auction site showed multiple copies of the game selling for $100 each, as reported by TheGamer. Several Twitch streams also briefly featured Assassin's Creed Shadows gameplay before being taken down, according to VGC. The game's official launch date remains March 20, 2025. This leak presents a significant setback for Ubisoft, a company already facing challenges with Assassin's Creed Shadows. Despite these difficulties, Ubisoft recently claimed strong preorder numbers for the game, stating they are comparable to Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the franchise's second most successful title.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot expressed confidence, highlighting positive early previews praising the narrative, immersive experience, dual protagonist approach, and overall gameplay. He commended the development team's dedication to delivering the franchise's most ambitious installment.
Assassin's Creed Shadows, initially slated for a November release, faced multiple delays, landing on its current March 20th launch date after postponements in February. The game's success is crucial for Ubisoft, which has recently experienced setbacks and investor concerns.
The game's promotional period has been marred by controversy. The development team apologized for inaccuracies in its depiction of Japan and for using a historical recreation group's flag without permission. Further adding to the challenges, collectible figure maker PureArts removed an Assassin's Creed Shadows statue due to its "insensitive" design.
