Palworld PS5 Release Excludes Japan, Nintendo Lawsuit Likely the Reason

Revealed at PlayStation State of Play Sept. 2024, Palworld is launching on the PS console after its Xbox and PC debuts. However, Palworld's PS5 release in Japan appears delayed following recent events with Nintendo.

Palworld PlayStation 5 Port in Japan Indefinitely DelayedPalworld PlayStation Launch Announced at State of Play

Palworld launched on the PS5 today, as announced at the PlayStation State of Play September 2024. In line with Palworld's PlayStation debut, Sony shared a trailer showcasing your Palworld character with gear inspired by Aloy from Sony's action RPG Horizon Forbidden West.

However, not all PlayStation users globally will access the game immediately. The Palworld PS5 port launched for most, but not Japan—where Nintendo and Pokémon filed suit against Pocketpair. Palworld's PS5 release paused in the country after Nintendo and Pokémon filed a patent infringement lawsuit against developer Pocketpair.

Palworld PS5 Japan Release Date Still Undecided

Following Sony's announcement, Palworld's Japanese Twitter (X) account updated on the PS5 version's release. "As announced on the official PlayStation State of Play, the PS5 version of 'Palworld' launched today in 68 countries and regions worldwide," Palworld announced.

The Palworld team apologized to Japanese PlayStation players for the game's unavailability. They confirmed a release date for Japan remains undecided. "The release date for Japan has not yet been determined. We apologize to Japanese players anticipating 'Palworld', but we will strive to deliver the game to all PS5 users as soon as possible."

Pocketpair didn't disclose the reason for the indefinite delay in that region, but it's assumed to be due to the legal proceedings between Nintendo, Pokémon, and Palworld for patent infringement. Last week, Nintendo announced a Tokyo Court case, seeking injunction and damages against Palworld. An injunction could halt Pocketpair's Palworld operations, potentially removing the game entirely.
