MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, its popular platform fighter, following the completion of its fifth season. The game's final curtain call is scheduled for May 30, 2025.
Season 5: The Final Act
The official MultiVersus (X) account confirmed the shutdown on January 31, 2025. A statement on the game's website clarified that Season 5, launching February 4, 2025, will be the final content update. This season will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes), both unlockable through gameplay. Post-Season 5, MultiVersus will be removed from all digital storefronts (PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store).
The reasons behind the game's closure remain unannounced.
Offline Play: A Lasting Legacy
While online servers will shut down, a local gameplay mode will persist. Players can enjoy offline matches against AI or with up to three friends. To access this offline mode, players must download the latest version of MultiVersus between February 4th and May 30th, 2025. The game will automatically create a local save file linked to the player's account, preserving all earned and purchased content.
In-game purchases were halted on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until the end of Season 5.
A Brief History and a Farewell
MultiVersus debuted in July 2022 as a free-to-play platform fighter, drawing comparisons to Super Smash Bros. The game underwent a relaunch in May 2024, incorporating new features, including a revamped roster, improved netcode, and a new PvE mode. Despite these improvements, the game reportedly faced challenges including technical issues and declining player numbers.
At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude to the MultiVersus community for their support. The game will remain available for download until May 30th, 2025, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
