Minecraft: Fractionated Gameplay

Relive the classic couch co-op experience with Minecraft! Before online multiplayer was ubiquitous, friends gathered around a single console. This guide shows you how to recreate that fun with split-screen Minecraft on Xbox One and other consoles. Gather your friends, snacks, and drinks – let's get started!

Important Notes:

  • Minecraft split-screen is only available on consoles (not PC).
  • You'll need an HD (720p) compatible TV or monitor and a console that supports this resolution. HDMI connection is recommended; VGA may require manual resolution adjustment in your console's settings.

Local Split-Screen (Up to 4 Players):

This method lets up to four players share a single console. The process varies slightly per console, but the general steps are as follows:

  1. Connect your console: Use an HDMI cable for optimal performance.
  2. Launch Minecraft: Create a new world or load an existing one. Crucially, disable the multiplayer option in the game settings.
  3. Configure your world: Set the difficulty and other world parameters.
  4. Start the game: Once loaded, press the appropriate button to add players. (This is usually the "Options" button on PlayStation or the "Start" button on Xbox – check your console's instructions if needed).
  5. Player login: Each additional player will need to log into their account to join the game.
  6. Enjoy! The screen will automatically split to accommodate all players.

Online Multiplayer with Local Split-Screen:

While you can't split-screen with online players, you can combine local split-screen with online multiplayer. Follow the local split-screen steps above, but enable the multiplayer option in the game settings before starting. Then, invite your online friends to join your game.
