Minecraft: Ace the Art of Armadillo Scutes

Author : Jack Feb 22,2025

The Armadillo, a passive mob introduced in Minecraft's 1.20.5 "Armored Paws" update, inhabits various warm biomes. Its tough scutes are crucial for crafting Wolf Armor. Here's how to acquire them:

Acquiring Armadillo Scutes:

Armadillos reside in warm biomes, spawning in groups of two or three. Approaching cautiously is key, as they defensively curl into a ball when startled.

These biomes are prime hunting grounds: Badlands, Eroded Badlands, Savanna, Savanna Plateau, Windswept Savanna, and Wooded Badlands.

Two methods exist for obtaining scutes:

  • Patient Waiting: Similar to chickens laying eggs, Armadillos shed a single scute every 5-10 minutes. This passive approach requires no tools but can be time-consuming.

  • Brush Method: The more efficient method involves a crafted Brush. This tool gently collects one scute per use.

Using a Brush:

In the Java Edition, a fully durable, unenchanted Brush works four times before breaking; in Bedrock Edition, it's five uses. Damaged brushes can be repaired using an anvil, preserving enchantments if present. Applicable enchantments include Unbreaking, Mending, and Curse of Vanishing.

A Brush requires one Feather, one Copper Ingot, and one Stick, placed vertically in the crafting grid.

Approach Armadillos slowly, then use the brush to collect scutes. Multiple brushes yield a larger scute harvest.

Six scutes are needed for a full suit of Wolf Armor, crafted at a Crafting Table.

Both methods offer viable routes to obtaining Armadillo Scutes for crafting.
