MCU Rivalry Update: Mods Disabled in Season 1

Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update Cracks Down on Mods

The Season 1 update for Marvel Rivals has reportedly disabled the use of custom-made mods, a popular pastime among players since the game's launch. While not explicitly announced, the update effectively prevents players from using modified character skins and other cosmetic alterations.

Launched on January 10, 2025, following a successful debut, Season 1 introduces significant content, including playable Fantastic Four characters (Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman initially, with Thing and Human Torch to follow), a new Battle Pass, updated maps, and a fresh Doom Match game mode. However, the unintended consequence for many players is the sudden cessation of mod functionality.

NetEase Games, the developer, has consistently maintained that mod usage violates the game's terms of service, regardless of whether the modifications are purely cosmetic. Previous actions, such as banning a mod featuring Donald Trump as Captain America, foreshadowed this broader crackdown. The Season 1 update appears to employ hash checking, a technique verifying data authenticity, to effectively eliminate widespread modding.

The community's reaction is mixed. While some anticipated this move given NetEase's prior actions and clear terms of service, many players express disappointment over the loss of customizable content. Some mod creators have even shared their unreleased work online, highlighting the impact of this change. Although some mods featured controversial content, including nude character skins, the primary driver behind NetEase's decision is likely financial. As a free-to-play game, Marvel Rivals relies heavily on in-app purchases of cosmetic items. The availability of free, custom mods would significantly undermine the game's monetization strategy and its profitability. Therefore, the ban on mods serves as a crucial business decision for the game's long-term sustainability.
