A new director has been chosen for the upcoming Street Fighter movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai, the writer, director, and executive producer behind the comedic series The Eric Andre Show, will helm the Legendary Entertainment adaptation.
Capcom is reportedly deeply involved in the project, which already has a release date set for March 20, 2026.
This marks the latest attempt to bring Street Fighter to the big screen, following the infamous 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison – a cult classic despite mixed initial critical reception.
While casting details remain under wraps, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters in action.
Initially, Danny and Michael Philippou, directors of Talk to Me, were attached to the project but left last summer. Sakurai’s involvement, given his background with The Eric Andre Show, suggests a potentially more absurdist tone for the film. This shift could be exciting for fans who appreciate the game's more cartoonish aspects.
In the meantime, players can enjoy the latest installment in the franchise, Street Fighter 6, which recently added Mai Shiranui to its roster. Read our full Street Fighter 6 review here.
