Microsoft Delays Fable to 2026, Unveils New Gameplay Footage
Microsoft has pushed back the release of its highly anticipated Fable reboot from 2025 to 2026, but offered a glimpse of new gameplay to appease fans. Developed by Playground Games (creators of the Forza Horizon series), this reboot marks a fresh start for the beloved Xbox franchise, previously helmed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios.
In a recent Xbox Podcast, Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, reassured fans that the delay is worthwhile. He highlighted Playground Games' track record of critically acclaimed titles, emphasizing the team's dedication to creating a visually stunning and engaging Fable experience. He described the game as featuring "amazing gameplay, British humor, [and] Playground’s version of Albion," promising the "most beautifully realized version of Albion you’ve ever seen."

Alongside the delay announcement, Microsoft shared a 50-second pre-alpha gameplay video. This brief but revealing footage showcased Fable's combat system, featuring various weapons (one-handed sword, two-handed hammer, two-handed sword) and magic (fireball). It also included city exploration, horseback riding through a fantastical forest, and the classic Fable tradition of kicking a chicken. The video even hints at a unique quest involving sausages and a werewolf-like creature.
Initially announced in 2020 as a "new beginning," the Fable reboot has been gradually unveiled through subsequent Xbox showcases, including a 2023 reveal featuring Richard Ayoade and a 2024 trailer. This marks the first mainline Fable game since 2010's Fable 3, and remains one of Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming releases.
