In *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*, you receive the Tournament quest from Gyoji, a resident of Yamato. After you’ve taken down several members of The Shinbakufu, Gyoji will set up camp outside your hideout, eager to discuss the tournament with you. This clandestine fighting arena is nestled in Southeastern Yamato at the Ominesanji Temple. To the west of the area, you’ll find the Ominesanji Overlook viewpoint, which you should synchronize to establish a fast travel point. This will make returning to the location and switching characters, if necessary, much easier.

Upon arriving at Ominesanji Temple, speak to Gyoji again. He will inform you that you must participate in four one-on-one duels followed by a battle with the ultimate champion. After the cutscene, ring the bell to initiate the first fight.

How to Complete The Tournament in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The Tournament challenges you with a series of high-stakes, one-on-one combat encounters. Between each fight, you have the flexibility to take breaks as needed. Always remember to ring the bell to start the next fight. Use this time to heal with rations and to upgrade or swap your weapons and armor.

To successfully defeat each opponent, we recommend wielding a long katana as Yasuke, focusing on dodging and parrying to exploit their vulnerabilities. Make effective use of abilities such as Power Dash and Payback when your adrenaline levels allow.

Understanding the weapon preferences of your opponents can significantly improve your strategy. Here's a list of the fighters and their weapons:

  • Lady Masago uses a Naginata.
  • Lord Suguru uses a Katana.
  • Lord Hokuto uses a Kanabo.
  • Lady O-Sen uses two Poison Katanas and throws ranged items.
  • Lord Unkai uses a Naginata and can heal if you keep your distance for too long.

After triumphing in the first tournament, speak with Gyoji again at the top of the hill. He will express his gratitude for his newfound freedom and mention future tournaments. The “Test Your Might” trophy will unlock during this conversation.

Best Loadout and Skills for Tournaments in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

The Long Katana is your best weapon choice for The Tournament in *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*. Equip the highest rarity Long Katana you own and upgrade it to its maximum level at the blacksmith in your hideout. Enhance it with an engraving that boosts Armor Damage or Armor Piercing for optimal effectiveness.

Your choice of armor is crucial as it not only increases your health but can also provide combat-altering abilities through engravings. Before heading to The Tournament, ensure you have unlocked the Samurai Daimyo Armor of Legend, obtained by defeating The Ox from the Shinbakufu, and the Protector’s Armor, earned from completing one of the Castles. The former enhances your damage by 75% but caps your health at 25%, while the latter enables you to parry unblockable attacks. Combining these engravings will allow you to defeat tournament enemies swiftly, provided you master the art of parrying.

For skills, allocate as many Mastery points as possible into the Long Katana and Samurai skill trees. Prioritize maxing out Combat Expert to boost your melee weapon damage, and unlock Power Dash and Payback for an edge in combat.

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows* is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, launching on March 20th.
