Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants

Monster Hunter Wilds New Monster, Nu Udra of the Oilwell Basin, Revealed by Director

In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka shed light on a new, vertically structured locale: the Oilwell Basin. This unique environment, a departure from the series' typically horizontal landscapes, offers a challenging and visually stunning experience. Fujioka explains the Basin's layered structure, transitioning from oil-slick swamps at the surface to magma-filled depths.

The Oilwell Basin's appearance dramatically shifts during the "Plenty" event, transforming into an underwater volcanic ecosystem reminiscent of Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. Tokuda highlights the unique ecosystem, teeming with life despite its seemingly barren exterior.

Reigning supreme is the Nu Udra, the "Black Flame"—a colossal, octopus-like monster with a flammable, slimy body. Its serpentine tentacles ensnare prey before unleashing devastating fire attacks. This fiery behemoth complements the Windward Plains' Rey Dau (lightning) and the Scarlet Forest's Uth Duna (water), forming a trio of elemental antagonists. Fujioka reveals the design inspiration: a desire to incorporate a tentacled creature, modified for a demonic aesthetic. The accompanying battle music, infused with elements of black magic, enhances the encounter's ominous atmosphere. Flash Bombs prove ineffective against the Nu Udra, which relies on its sensitive tentacles rather than sight.

The Oilwell Basin isn't solely populated by the Nu Udra. Hunters will also face the Ajarakan, a fiery, ape-like monster wielding martial arts-inspired attacks. The Rompopolo, a bizarre, globular creature with needle-like teeth and toxic gas attacks, adds another layer of challenge. Its design, inspired by mad scientist tropes, belies surprisingly "cute" equipment rewards.

A familiar face returns: Gravio, from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, makes a comeback, fitting seamlessly into the volcanic landscape. Tokuda explains the decision, citing its suitability to the environment and its unique combat style.
