Larian Studios, creators of the 2023 Game of the Year, Baldur's Gate 3, have revealed details about a shelved project: a playable Baldur's Gate sequel.
A Playable Baldur's Gate Sequel Abandoned
Larian CEO Swen Vincke recently shared with PC Gamer that a follow-up to BG3, already in a playable state, was abandoned to pursue new projects. While acknowledging fans would have enjoyed it, the team felt the need to move beyond the D&D IP after years of development. The prospect of potentially spending another three years iterating on a similar project led to the decision.
The team's morale significantly improved after deciding against further Baldur's Gate development. They are now focused on two unannounced projects, described by Vincke as their most ambitious yet. This decision also affected planned DLC for BG3.
Larian's Future: Beyond Baldur's Gate
Larian's history with the Divinity series suggests a potential return to that franchise. While a Divinity: Original Sin 3 has been hinted at, Vincke confirmed their next Divinity project will be unexpected.
Baldur's Gate 3 will receive one last major patch in Fall 2024, introducing mod support, cross-play, and new endings. Afterward, the team will take a break before focusing on their new endeavors.
