Best Avowed Companions, Ranked by Helpfulness

Author : Jason Mar 15,2025

In *Avowed*, companions aren't just for conversation; they're vital for navigating the world and conquering its challenges. Their abilities range from path-opening to devastating combat prowess. Let's rank every *Avowed* companion from least to most helpful.

4. Marius

Marius in Avowed

Early on, Marius offers some utility in exploration, helping locate items and plants. However, his combat effectiveness quickly diminishes as other companions join your party. His abilities, while useful in specific situations, lack the overall power needed for most encounters. Here's a breakdown:

Blinding Roots: Roots enemies (upgradeable to stun, trap multiple, and inflict Bleed). Heart Seeker: A piercing shot that always hits (upgradeable for multiple targets, increased damage vs. low-health enemies, and reduced cooldown). Shadow Step: A teleporting attack (upgradeable for instant kills on stunned enemies, increased damage vs. low-health enemies, and increased target count). Wounding Shots: Inflicts Bleed Accumulation (upgradeable to reduce enemy damage reduction, slow enemies, and further reduce damage).

Marius excels against specific enemy types and complements melee-focused Envoys, but falls short as a consistently reliable companion throughout the game.

3. Giatta

Giatta in Avowed

Giatta, a support-focused Animancer, shines in her ability to heal, shield, and buff the party. While not a damage dealer, her utility is invaluable in intense situations. Her abilities include:

Purification: Heals allies (upgradeable for increased healing, enemy interruption, and increased ally damage reduction). Barrier: Grants allies temporary health (upgradeable for increased temporary health, healing on barrier expiration, and self-protection). Acceleration: Increases ally movement and attack speed (upgradeable for damage reduction, extended duration, and ability cooldown reduction). Reconstruction: Heals allies with attacks (upgradeable for increased healing of low-health allies, temporary health for full-health allies, and ally revival on enemy kills).

Giatta also activates Essence Generators, opening up late-game areas. She’s a perfect complement to magic-focused Envoy builds.

2. Kai

Kai in Avowed

Kai, an early companion, remains consistently helpful throughout the game. This tank deals significant damage and requires minimal player input. His abilities are:

Fire and Ire: A high-stun attack with a taunt (upgradeable for ignition, increased stun, and cooldown reduction). Unbending Defense: Health regeneration and damage reduction (upgradeable for increased damage reduction, increased health regeneration, and an area-of-effect attack on expiration). Leap of Daring: A stunning area-of-effect attack with a taunt (upgradeable for increased area of effect, temporary health per hit, and increased attack damage per hit). Second Wind: Self-revival (upgradeable for increased health restoration, attack speed boost, and ability cooldown reset).

Kai's abilities are effective against various enemies, offering both single-target and crowd control options. His self-revival makes him exceptionally reliable. He even uses fire to clear environmental obstacles.

1. Yatzli

Yatzli in Avowed

Yatzli, a powerful Wizard, boasts high damage output and excellent crowd control. She's essentially your air support in the Living Lands. Her abilities include:

Essence Explosion: Explosive arcane damage (upgradeable for increased blast radius, fire accumulation, and cooldown reduction). Minoletta’s Missile Battery: A volley of homing missiles (upgradeable for increased fire rate, range, and shock accumulation). Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows enemies (upgradeable for increased slow, area-of-effect slow, and frost accumulation). Blast: Area-of-effect damage on impact (upgradeable for explosive damage to break obstacles, increased stun, and status effect chance).

Yatzli's powerful abilities and obstacle-clearing capabilities make her the top companion choice, even though she's recruited later in the game.

Avowed releases on PC and Xbox on February 18.
