Ubisoft's latest stealth-action open-world masterpiece, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has finally graced us with its presence, marking the 14th installment in the core series. Launched back in 2007 with Desmond Miles exploring his ancestor Altaïr's life through the Animus, the franchise has now journeyed to 16th-century Japan, where players embody the roles of Naoe and Yasuke. With over 30 games under the Assassin's Creed banner, we're focusing solely on the mainline entries here, excluding mobile, side-scrolling, VR, and spin-offs like Bloodlines or Liberation.
I've taken the liberty of ranking these mainline games using an IGN Tier List, based purely on my personal enjoyment. You can view my tier list below:
Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag remains my top favorite, nestled in the S-tier alongside Assassin’s Creed 2. Black Flag's perfect blend of island exploration, thrilling ship combat, and a vibrant cast of characters offers what I believe to be the quintessential Assassin's Creed experience. Assassin’s Creed 2, which thrust the series into the spotlight, also shares this elite rank. In the A-tier, I've placed Valhalla, a choice that might surprise some due to its perceived bloat, but I adored its Viking-themed combat and couldn't resist the charm of the Orlog minigame. Unity joins it, praised for its breathtaking recreation of French Revolution-era Paris, which still holds up a decade later.
Do you disagree with my rankings? Perhaps you find Valhalla too expansive or consider Assassin’s Creed 2 overrated? I encourage you to create your own tier list for all mainline Assassin's Creed games, comparing your S, A, B, C, and D tiers with the broader IGN community.
