Elden Ring fans consider the Tree of Erd to be a “Christmas tree”

Reddit user Independent-Design17 proposed an intriguing theory: Elden Ring's Erd Tree draws inspiration from the Australian Christmas tree, Nuytsia floribunda.

Superficial similarities are undeniable, particularly when comparing the smaller Erd Trees in the game. However, fans have unearthed even more compelling parallels. In Elden Ring lore, the Erd Tree guides the souls of the departed, explaining the catacombs found at its base. Interestingly, Nuytsia holds a similar spiritual significance in Australian Aboriginal culture; each flowering branch represents a deceased soul, and its vibrant colors evoke the sunset, the perceived destination of spirits.

Further strengthening this connection is Nuytsia's semi-parasitic nature. This tree thrives by absorbing nutrients from neighboring plants. A parallel theory exists within the Elden Ring community, suggesting the Erd Tree is parasitic, having usurped the life force of an ancient Great Tree. However, recent findings indicate that references to a "Great Tree" in game descriptions are mistranslations, actually referring to the Erd Tree's own vast root system.

Ultimately, whether FromSoftware intentionally incorporated these Nuytsia parallels remains a mystery, known only to the developers themselves.
