The "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" app, a project born from my passion for preserving cultural heritage, is dedicated to the legends of Devarattam. This app celebrates the contributions of Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman (retired teacher), Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar, and Kalaimamani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, recipients of the Kalaimani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards respectively. My deepest gratitude also goes to my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the beloved legends of Devarattam. The app's core purpose is to disseminate information about Devarattam and its distinguished awardees, providing a detailed overview of both.
Devarattam, a vibrant folk dance of Tamil Nadu, boasts a rich history, traditionally performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, both historically and in the present day. While the dance comprises 32 to 72 steps, the foundation rests on 32 fundamental movements, with additional steps serving as variations. Devarattam dancers gracefully execute these steps, each holding a kerchief in each hand, adorned with salangai (anklets) on their legs, and accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument.
